the History of Fleet

The name Fleet is believed to have come from the French word “Le Flete” meaning shallow water and referring to Fleet Pond & Nature Reserve, the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire albeit one of the shallowest. What is now Fleet and Crookham was for centuries an almost treeless and uninhabited heathland that people used to graze animals and cut peat for fuel. Development started slowly with about 20 new houses by 1839.
